The Rockies have won nine consecutive series at Coors Field, but that is to end this weekend against the Cubs. In this edition of Rockies Inside Pitch, Ubaldo Jimenez is really struggling lately, Kaz Matsui has an eight-game hitting streak, Troy Tulowitzki has shown extra-base hit power, and much more:
The Rockies have won nine consecutive series at Coors Field, a streak that will end with the current four-game series with the Cubs. Chicago won the first two games -- 10-2 and 6-2 -- giving the Rockies consecutive losses at home for the first time since they lost three straight May 30-June 1 (two to St. Louis and one to Cincinnati). The Rockies, who are 33-23 at Coors Field, last lost a series there May 18-20 when they dropped two of three to Kansas City. CUBS 6, ROCKIES 2: The Rockies lost their fifth straight game to the Cubs this season. First baseman Jeff Baker
's throwing error helped Chicago score three unearned runs in the third, the last two on Jason Kendall's two-out single.
NOTES, QUOTES:RHP Rodrigo Lopez, who is out for the season, will have surgery Aug. 22 on the torn flexor tendon in his right forearm. The operation will be performed in Los Angeles by Dr. Lewis Yocum.
1B Jeff Baker was hit in the face by a pitch thrown by Jason Marquis in the seventh. Baker was cut on the left cheekbone and was taken to a local hospital for tests. Baker made his second consecutive start at first base, replacing Todd Helton, who left Wednesday's game with back spasms. This is just the fifth time Baker has started back-to-back games and the first since June 23-24 at Toronto where he started at first base and designated hitter.
RHP Aaron Cook lost for the first time in six starts since July 8 and had his three-game winning streak snapped. --3B Garrett Atkins went hitless in three at-bats, ending his 10-game hitting streak. During the streak, Atkins went 19-for-38. He has hit safely in 16 of his past 18 games.
2B Kaz Matsui went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Matsui has hit .516 (16-for-31) during the streak.
Four of SS Troy Tulowitzki's past seven hits have gone for extra bases. He has gone 8-for-19 in his past five games.
RHP Manny Corpas had allowed only one earned run in 11 1/3 innings before surrendering a leadoff homer to Matt Murton in the ninth. It was just the fourth homer off Corpas, who has worked 54 1/3 innings, and the first he has allowed at Coors Field since June 5.
BY THE NUMBERS: 171 -- Pitches thrown by Ubaldo Jimenez in 6 2/3 innings while losing his past two starts.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Delay is not denial. That's what he needs to hold onto. You can wait eight years, you can wait two more weeks to see how this plays out, I would think." -- Manager Clint Hurdle on catcher Edwin Bellorin, who in his ninth professional season finally made his major-league debut Tuesday, but strained his left hamstring running out a ball on his first at-bat and ended up on the disabled list.
