Rockies Buy Low On Slowey

DALLAS, Texas -- Kevin Slowey suffered through the worst season of his young career in 2011 and became a possible non-tender candidate this off-season. The Rockies, however, swooped in and took him off the Twins' hands, and in doing so created some added depth to their rotation come spring time.

Landing Kevin Slowey may not exactly be a blockbuster for Colorado, but depth is going to be very important to them with some youth coming into the rotation. While many of those young arms could be fully prepared to pitch a full season in the big league rotation, particularly Drew Pomeranz, no team can have enough veteran depth to back up their up and coming youngsters.

Slowey is not going to block any of these young arms like Pomeranz, Tyler Chatwood, or Esmil Rogers but he makes for a good insurance policy. He's a strike throwing machine, which if anything will serve as a good example for the Rockies' young arms.

With all that said, if Slowey does indeed becoming a regular in Colorado' rotation, he may have a rough go of it. His tendency toward fly balls has to be of extreme concern and he doesn't have the power stuff to miss bats. In other words, the long ball may be a major issue for him in the high altitude. On the other hand, this only turns out to be a poor deal if the player to be named later is of some greater value. Some buzz points to minor league righty, Parker Frazier, being that player. If that's the case, it's still a solid deal for the Rockies. While Frazier likely has a big league career ahead of him, he's comparable to Slowey in terms of upside. Recommended Stories
