Tigers Swing Big Trade, Land Iglesias

Just when everyone thought the Tigers were done, they pulled a shocker and landed young star shortstop Jose Iglesias from the Red Sox. The acquisition came at a steep price though, as the Tigers gave up one of their top prospects in outfielder Avisail Garcia.

Acquired Jose Iglesias (SS) from Boston Red Sox in exchange for Avisail Garcia (OF) and Brayan Villarreal (RHP)

As can often be the case with general manager Dave Dombrowski, on the same day he stated they were comfortable with their middle infield situation, they swung a big trade, landing the Cuban shortstop in Iglesias, who has been shining for the Red Sox thus far this season.

Plenty of players frequently have the term "Gold Glove-caliber" thrown around about them - but Iglesias is the real deal. While his bat is still a work in progress (despite what his .330 average would lead you to believe), his defense isn't just big league ready, but arguably dramatically shifts the landscape of the Tigers infield, assuming he slides in at shortstop. Longer term, he has the potential to hit for a solid average with some gap power.

This deal is obviously cover for the expected suspension of Jhonny Peralta, who has long been rumored to be linked to the Biogenesis scandal. Further, Peralta is a free agent at the end of the season, while Iglesias is just 23 and three years away from hitting arbitration.

While many assumed that Garcia would be off-limits, the opportunity to flip him for a player of similar potential and skill, at a position of need, clearly trumped the desire to hang onto Avisail. Villarreal is likely a throw-in piece as someone the Red Sox hope is a couple of tweaks away from regaining his effectiveness.

Never a dull moment for Dombrowski, who if there was any uncertainty, left no doubt remaining at this point that the Tigers are ready to win now, and not leaving any potentail suspensions up to chance.

Acquired Jose Veras (RHP) from Houston Astros in exchange for Danry Vasquez (OF) and a player to be named later, by 9/15

The Tigers pulled the trigger on the reliever everyone knew they needed on Monday morning, acquiring Veras in exchange for Vasquez and a PTBNL. Veras is an ideal fit for the Tigers short-term needs; an affordable contract for a pitcher who has been very effective closing this season in Houston, and has been a very good setup man in the past. Veras this season has an ERA under three, an FIP and xFIP in the mid-3's, and a K:BB ratio over three. Said Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski, in a release announcing the deal: "We are pleased to add an experienced arm to our bullpen," Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said in a release. "Jose can pitch in a variety of roles, provides depth in the bullpen and complements the roles of Joaquin Benoit and Drew Smyly."

The Tigers definitely paid a high price though, giving up Vasquez, plus another player that will be named by mid-September. Vasquez was signed out of Venezuela in 2010 with a $1.2 million signing bonus, and has consistently been among the top five prospects in the organization since being signed. He checked in at #5 on the TigsTown 2013 Midseason Top Ten. At age 19, he's hitting .281 in West Michigan with a .723 OPS, and has plus potential at the plate. He's likely at least two, and probably three, years away from being ready for a major league assignment.

Given his youth and the organizational strength at the position with players like Nick Castellanos, Avisail Garcia, Steven Moya, Daniel Fields and Tyler Collins, it's a position of wealth, arguably the only one right now, and a player far enough away from contributing that he was ultimately expendable.

There's no word yet on the accompanying PTBNL, potentially indicating that the Astros have a list of players to choose from who they'll be scouting in coming weeks to identify the right fit.

Jair Jurrjens officially returns to the organization and joins the Mud Hens, where the Tigers will look for him to provide starting pitching depth at the upper levels of the organization, and see if he can regain the form that made him a Rookie of the Year candidate and All-Star.

Elsewhere, some fans had a bit of a scare of when lefty prospect Kyle Ryan hit the disabled list, just the latest in a long run of Lakeland pitchers to head to the disabled list this season. However, the injury is just a blister on one of his fingers on his throwing hand, and shouldn't sideline him for an extended period of time.

Placed Franklin Navarro (C ) on GCL Tigers' 7-day disabled list

Placed David Paulino (RHP) on GCL Tigers' 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury

The evolution of the Mud Hens' bullpen continues, as former Tigers' starting pitcher Jeremy Bonderman joins the group, with the organization continuing to search for usable bullpen arms. Kenny Faulk also returns from the disabled list as Brayan Villarreal heads to it - both at this point are outside possibilities to help the Tigers this year. Bonderman did toss a scoreless inning of relief in his first appearance on Friday, striking out one.

Most concerning beyond Toledo is the news out of the GCL, with two prominent names hitting the disabled list; Paulino had impressed so far this summer, but an elbow injury looks like it will sideline him until 2014. Navarro's injury isn't thought to be as serious, but nonetheless another prominent name getting caught by the injury bug.
