Even though the Colorado Rockies have gone 3-3 over the past seven days, they wouldn’t have even won that many games without left fielder Carlos Gonzalez, our Scout.com Player of the Week for June 10-16.
Over the past week, Gonzalez has led Major League Baseball in slugging (1.095) and OPS (1.617) while hitting .476 (10-for-21) with six runs (T6 in MLB), and the second-most RBI in all of baseball with eight driven in. He cracked two doubles, one triple and three home runs over the past seven days.
Gonzalez kicked the week off going just 1-for-5 with four strikeouts against the Washington Nationals on June 11, but his one hit proved to be a big one: A three-run blast to left field with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to put the Rockies up, 4-3, in an eventual 8-3 win over the Nats. Over the next five days, Gonzalez struck out just twice more.
The Rockies, though, lost the next three straight to Washington and Philadelphia, but in the series opener against the Phillies, Gonzalez went 4-for-4 with two runs – including a solo shot – in an 8-7 loss in Denver, before going 4-for-8 over the next two days with two doubles, his third homer of the week and three RBIs as the Rockies downed Philadelphia 10-5 and 5-2 to take the series. With his two-run homer on Sunday, Gonzalez became the first player in the National League to reach 20 home runs on the year.
Over the past three games, Gonzalez went 8-for-12 with five runs scored and one stolen base.
