Ritchie plans to become the head baseball coach at his alma mater George Washington University. Coach Steve Mrowka was fired by GW earlier this year. George Washington athletic department spokesmen could not immediately be reached for comment.
Ritchie was not fired, according to the source, but made the decision to coach his Alma mater. The Pirates agreed to let him accept the position.
Ritchie was an All-America outfielder at GW and was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year as a senior in 1986. He was inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame in 1999.
The university is expected to announce Ritchie’s hiring Tuesday.
Ritchie, 48, became the hitting coach in November 2010. He spent seven years with the Pirates' organization, previously as the minor league hitting coordinator.
The Pirates finished 14th in the National League in batting average, 14th in on-base percentage and second in strikeouts.
